Safety Training That Works the Way Michigan Contractors Work

Safety Training That Works the Way Michigan Contractors Work

If you run crews in Michigan, you already know the safety training puzzle. Owners and GCs want to see OSHA cards before your people step on site. MIOSHA, Michigan's state-plan program, enforces its own construction standards, and your training needs to line up with them. And your workforce is rarely in one place, so pulling everyone off three jobsites for the same class on the same day is not realistic.

The Construction Association of Michigan (CAM) built its safety offerings around that reality. Whether you need a single superintendent certified as a competent person, a full crew carded before a project kicks off, or ongoing development for the person who owns safety at your company, CAM has a practical path to get there.

Instruction aligned with MIOSHA and OSHA

CAM's safety courses are built on the standards Michigan contractors are actually inspected against. Classes reference MIOSHA construction standards by part number, such as Part 45 Fall Protection, Part 12 Scaffolds, Part 10 Cranes and Derricks, and Part 680 Occupational Noise, alongside the federal OSHA rules that owners and national GCs expect. Many courses are taught by instructors with MIOSHA backgrounds, so your team hears how the rules are applied in the field, not just how they read on paper.

The result is training that holds up on two fronts: it prepares your people to work safely, and it gives you documentation that stands up when a compliance officer or a prequalification reviewer asks for it.

Credentials your customers recognize

CAM training leads to credentials that carry weight on Michigan jobsites, including:

  • OSHA 10-Hour and 30-Hour for Construction course completion cards
  • MIOSHA Construction 10-Hour, which earns participants both a MIOSHA and an OSHA 10-hour card
  • MIOSHA Training Institute (MTI) certificates, earned by completing the required and elective MTI courses
  • First Aid, CPR and AED certification, valid for two years
  • EPA RRP Certified Lead Renovator (initial and refresher)
  • Class IV Asbestos Awareness certification card

Classes at the CAM Training & Education Center (CAMTEC)

CAMTEC hosts a full calendar of open-enrollment safety classes, so you can send one or two people at a time without disrupting an entire crew. Course topics include:

Foundational certification

  • OSHA 10-Hour and OSHA 30-Hour for Construction
  • First Aid, CPR and AED Combined

Competent person and hazard-specific training

  • Fall Protection – Competent Person (hands-on with equipment and letters of interpretation)
  • Ground Supported Scaffold Competent Person (hands-on with a 1/3-scale frame scaffold)

Private training, scheduled around your work

Open-enrollment classes are great for individuals. But when you need to train a whole crew, or several crews coming off different jobsites, a private session is often the smarter move.

CAM offers private training on a date and time that works for you. Instead of working your schedule around a public calendar, you choose when your people train, whether that means a slow week between phases, a weather day, or the week before a new project mobilizes. Everyone hears the same material from the same instructor, at the same time, which makes it easier to build consistent practices across every site you run.

To set up a private session, contact CAM at training@buildwithcam.com or 248-972-1000.

Professional development through the CAM Safety Committee

Safety training shouldn't stop once the card is in someone's wallet. The CAM Safety Committee gives the people responsible for safety at your company a steady source of professional development, and every CAM member firm is welcome to send a representative.

The committee meets the second Monday of each month from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., virtually most months and in person quarterly. Each meeting typically opens with a presentation from an invited speaker, followed by discussion of current industry issues and CAM training initiatives. This year's topics have included MIOSHA inspections, citations and appeals; preparing for a crane on your jobsite; the role of the competent person; and advanced excavation safety with shoring and shielding.

Can't make every meeting? Members can submit safety and health questions to the committee for research and a response.

Email safety@buildwithcam.com to request the calendar invite.

Join us November 5 at the Safety Leadership Conference

For owners, executives, safety managers and HR leaders, the 2026 Safety Leadership Conference is the best single day of the year to sharpen your safety program. CAM partners with the Greater Detroit Chapter of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) to bring together some of the region's most respected safety voices.

When: Thursday, November 5, 2026

Where: Macomb Community College South Campus, John Lewis Conference Center

The day opens with a keynote from Dr. John Austin on the leader behaviors that drive improvements in safety and operations. Attendees then choose up to four workshops. Several speak directly to contractors managing crews across multiple sites:

  • The Multi-Site Safety Playbook: keeping standards consistent across locations and tracking leading indicators, not just injury rates
  • You Don't Sign Their Paycheck: getting safety buy-in from subcontractor crews on multi-employer jobsites
  • The Role of the Competent Person: what the designation requires and how to document competency
  • MIOSHA Essentials: MIOSHA consultation services, grants, MTI scholarships and more, presented by MIOSHA staff
  • Funding Safety Before the Fall: building the business case for safety, including EMR's impact on bid competitiveness
  • Hope in Hard Hats: suicide prevention and mental health in the construction industry

Registration is $250 per person and includes breakfast and lunch. The program qualifies for CEUs and recertification points for professional designations. The registration deadline is October 29.
